Understanding of mechanisms of cellular aging in humans requires reliable models that can rapidly reproduce key aspects of aging both in vitro and ex vivo. These pre-clinical models are also essential for the successful development of potent anti-ageing therapeutic and cosmeceutical strategies.
As a result of several years of research, a team of scientists at the Monasterium Laboratory established inducible in vitro and ex vivo human skin aging models. Using proprietary exogenous aging stimuli, these models allow a rapid, reproducible induction of most cardinal features of cellular aging, such as senescence and senescence-associated secretory phenotype, activation of DNA damage repair (DDR) pathway, dysregulation in the synthesis of extracellular matrix components. Most importantly, the induced aging features are reversible or prevented with known anti-aging compounds. Our new pre-clinical models provide a unique opportunity to gain insight into the mechanisms of human skin aging and present valuable tools for screening and testing novel anti-aging compounds.
